Screw Machining (High Volume)

Deep hole drilling (DHD) is typically defined as a 6:1 or greater depth-to-diameter ratio on our equipment. This process typically uses a Carbide CT drill bit to create deep, precise holes in one step instead of many steps. It is accomplished by forcing up to 2000 lbs of coolant pressure at the drill tip. This pressure reduces heat and evacuates chips thus allowing the drill to run cooler, work faster and be more precise for a longer period of time.

This precision is important for many applications, such as creating passageways for Hose/  Hydraulic Fittings, press fit retention, fuel fittings, and more! Deep hole drilling can also create holes for taps without using reamers, broaches, recesses, and compression fitting applications in an assembly to name a few.

Buells deep hole drilling processes

We can produce with one drill what takes others two or more drills to accomplish with greater precision. If you need to create deep, precise holes, low or high volume, Buell is likely the right solution for you.

CNC Swiss and Lathe Turning Centers come equipped with high-pressure coolant on all of our equipment. This technology provides a more precise and efficient drilling method than not using CT technology. This saves time and money all the while reducing quality-related issues in the internal features.

Davenport screw machines coolant through drilling is a proprietary process developed by Buell for Buell. The OEM didn’t offer this technology so our team developed this to support our customers’ high volumes, deep hole drilling needs.

Advantages of deep hole drilling

Deep hole, CT drilling provides many advantages over traditional machining methods, making it an ideal choice for various projects. CT Drilling is an essential tool in many industries. Our equipment offers a variety of benefits, including precision, straightness, speed, and versatility.

  • Precision: CT Drilling allows for the creation of small, precise holes. It is crucial for many applications, such as fluid control, assembly, or press fit applications.
  • Straightness: CT Drilling produces straight holes, even in difficult-to-work-with materials. Carbide is more rigid and handles heat best thus providing improved concentricity and hole straightness.
  • Speed: CT Drilling is a fast process that can create large and small holes quickly.
  • Versatility: CT Drilling applies to different materials, including steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminum, bronze and more!

Applications of deep hole drilling

Coolant through drilling can be used in various applications, such as in fluid control, Hydraulics, automotive, consumer goods, lawn and garden, medical, defense industries and more. Common applications for deep hole drilling include the following:

  • Pistons
  • Hydraulic Fittings
  • Fuel Injectors
  • Barbed Fittings
  • Choke Tube
  • Hose Nipples
  • Compression Limiters
  • Quick Connect Fittings
  • Bushings
  • Hose Fittings
  • Stance Rods
  • Adapters Armatures
  • Valve Bodies
