Shape Your Future at the ROC With Your Hands Career Exploration Event

At Buell Automatics, we believe that building a rewarding career shouldn’t require a mountain of student debt or a traditional four-year degree. That’s why we’re excited to participate in the ROC With Your Hands event on October 7, 2025, at the Rochester Community Sports Complex.

This hands-on career exploration fair, hosted by the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA), is designed for students in grades 7–12 to discover pathways to success in industries that power our economy. If you’re a student, parent or educator curious about alternatives to college, this event is your chance to see how a trade career can offer financial stability, creativity and purpose.

Why Consider a Career in the Trades?

The narrative that success only comes through a college degree is shifting. Skilled trades are in high demand, offering competitive salaries, job security and the satisfaction of creating tangible products. For example, careers in advanced manufacturing and machining (like what we do at Buell Automatics) allow you to work with cutting-edge technology while earning a livable wage from day one. Many tradespeople graduate from apprenticeship programs with no student debt and the potential to earn a six-figure income by their mid-20s.

At Buell, we’ve seen firsthand how careers in machining and manufacturing change lives. Our team includes CNC operators, Davenport machine specialists and quality inspectors who started as apprentices and now thrive in well-paying roles. These jobs aren’t just about turning wrenches or running machines; they involve problem-solving, creativity and contributing to industries like aerospace, medical devices and automotive technology.

What to Expect at ROC With Your Hands

This event is more than a career fair. It’s an immersive experience. Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Try Hands-On Activities: Participate in interactive demonstrations highlighting advanced manufacturing, skilled trades, heavy equipment operation and automotive technology.
  • Meet Industry Professionals: Talk directly to people who’ve built careers in these fields, including Buell Automatics team members like our CNC operator, Davenport operator and quality inspector.
  • See Real-World Applications: We’ll display a variety of parts we manufacture, along with assemblies that show how these components are used in everyday products.
  • Explore Apprenticeship Pathways: Learn about “earn while you learn” programs that combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, leading to nationally recognized credentials.

The Buell Automatics Apprentice Program

We’re proud to offer apprenticeship opportunities that provide a direct path to a fulfilling career. Our program includes:

  • Paid Training: Apprentices receive wages from day one, with increases as they gain skills.
  • Mentorship: Work alongside experienced machinists and engineers who guide your growth.
  • Diverse Roles: Train as a machine operator, CNC technician, quality inspector or logistics coordinator.

Apprenticeships are a time-tested way to gain skills without debt. In fact, 93% of apprentices who complete their programs remain employed, with average annual salaries of $77,000. At Buell, we’re committed to helping the next generation succeed through hands-on learning and mentorship.

Why Machining Is a Career of the Future

Machining isn’t just about traditional manufacturing; it’s a field that integrates technology, innovation and sustainability. As industries evolve, the demand for skilled machinists continues to grow. For example:

  • Advanced Manufacturing: Uses computer-controlled machinery to create precision components for medical devices, renewable energy systems and aerospace technology.
  • Sustainability: Modern manufacturing focuses on reducing waste and improving efficiency, contributing to a greener economy.
  • Job Security: With a nationwide shortage of skilled tradespeople, those entering the field can expect long-term career opportunities.
